Paragraph Writing: Your Group Chat Needs a Topic Sentence

You ask the family chat what time dinner starts. The reply includes parking instructions, a weather report, and a story about a missing casserole dish. Somewhere in paragraph three, dinner is at six. A paragraph can have the same problem: plenty of words, no clear job.
Start here
A useful paragraph develops one main idea. A topic sentence states that idea; the other sentences explain, illustrate, or support it. Topic sentences do not always come first, but putting one near the beginning is a helpful starting strategy.
Before
“The library has tables. My kitchen is noisy. I have a paper due. There are outlets at the library. My laundry needs folding.” Every sentence might be true. Together, they ask the reader to organize the pile.
After
“The library is my best place to study after work. Its large tables give me space for notes, and nearby outlets keep my laptop charged. At home, noise and unfinished chores keep interrupting me. Studying at the library helps me focus on the paper.” The details now support a single point.
Try it
Choose the sentence that fits a paragraph about making a study session easier to begin: “I leave my textbook open to the next exercise” or “My favorite lunch is soup.” Then write one sentence explaining why the first detail helps.
Check your answer
The textbook detail supports the study-session topic. A possible explanation: “Having the next task ready removes the decision about where to start.” The soup may deserve its own paragraph, preferably near lunchtime.
Level up
Ask whether each detail needs evidence or explanation. “This method improved everyone’s grades” is a broad claim that needs support. “This setup helps me find my notes quickly” is a narrower personal observation. Do not make a bigger claim than your evidence supports.
Save this
Name the paragraph’s job. Keep relevant details. Explain their connection. Start a new paragraph when the main idea changes. There is no universal rule that every paragraph must have exactly five sentences.
